A summer spent with Team Ontario(PHOTOS) Cathy O'Doherty
August 24, 2009 - Cathy O'Doherty, Director of Volleyball for the National Capitals Volleyball Club, spent her summer coaching with Team Ontario. She shares her experience...
As I pack my bags to leave New College Residence at the University of Toronto, it's hard not to reflect on my decision to join the coaching staff of Team Ontario. We fly to PEI in the morning to compete in the second week of the Canada Summer Games. Training this women's 20U team has consumed the past 6 months of my life - from trips to Toronto to complete my Level 3 Coaching certification in the winter, to tryouts in May, to the Team Ontario Staging in June and finally 2 months of training and preparation here at U. of T. I have met remarkable coaches, athletes and administrators. I have had an awesome trip to Calgary and the Rockies, taken in the sites and sounds of Toronto - Argos game, Jersey Boys, Rogers Cup, garbage strike - touched base with some great old friends, shared a residence floor with members of a steel band from Trinidad who performed at Caribana, spent lots of time with my oldest daughter Meghan who works in downtown TO and eaten too many residence meals to count. So as I finish trying to get all my "stuff" into one piece of luggage, I find myself asking the question - did I make the right decision? Should I have spent my summer sitting on the deck of my cottage? Not a tough question of course - if life is filled with experiences, then mine just got a whole lot fuller! It's really quite amazing where coaching can take you - and right now it's going to take me to the Canada Games in Charlottetown. I can't wait!
