5th Anniversary Celebration at 2009 CAPS Banquet

June 3, 2009 — The National Capitals Volleyball Club celebrated the end to its 5th Anniversary season – in style – at Algonquin College at its annual banquet. Players and parents assembled to enjoy some great food, some fun speeches and slide shows, to hand out gifts and awards, and to sign yearbooks. Club President, Bob O’Doherty, framed the club’s first five years in a speech to the membership:
— — — — —
“Wow! As I write this President’s Message for a fifth time, I can’t believe how quickly time has flown by. It seems only yesterday that a small group of parents who shared a common vision came together to form the National Capitals Volleyball Club (NCVC), but it was actually five years ago, in June 2004...
... In looking back over the past five years, it is safe to say that the NCVC has exceeded all expectations in meeting and surpassing the objectives that were set at its founding. Close to 40 girls have graduated from the CAPS program over the past five years and moved on to play at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), Canadian College (CCAA) and NCAA levels. Many of these girls have also represented Region 6 and Ontario in Regional and Provincial team programs and competitions, while some have also represented Canada in international beach and indoor competitions.
On the coaching front, several CAPS coaches have contributed to Region 6 and Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) programs over the past five years, including the coaching of Regional and Provincial Teams. Cathy O’Doherty, the Head Coach of the CAPS, has been part of the Women’s Provincial Team program for the past two years and will be part of the Team Ontario coaching staff for the 2009 Canada Summer Games coming up this August in Charlottetown, PEI.
At a team level, the 2004-05 18U CAPS were the first Ottawa team ever to win a Provincial Championship at any age class level. Since this achievement, several CAPS teams have followed in their footsteps winning medals at Provincial, Canadian and International competitions. In addition, CAPS teams have competed against and beaten all the top club teams in Canada over the past five years including the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club (FVVC), Calgary Dinos, Manitoba Bisons and who can forget Durham Attack Black.
We have also had some notable individual achievements since inception, including the following major award winners:
Tess Edwards / 2005 OVA Evelyn Holick Award Bob O’Doherty / 2006-2007 OVA Volunteer of the Year Award Lauren Carter / 2009 OVA Evelyn Holick Award...
... The season kicked-off with tryouts starting the second weekend of September 2008 at St. Pius X High School and ended with the 16U CAPS competing at the 16 & Under Canadian West Open at the Olympic Oval on the campus of the University of Calgary from May 16-18, 2009. The club’s showcase team, the 18U Girls, had another very successful season. This past season saw the 18U CAPS finish in 5th place at the 18U Tier 1 Ontario Championships in Waterloo in April and place 12th at the 18U Canadian Open Championships held recently at the beginning of May right here in Ottawa. The 18U CAPS also enjoyed success outside of the province, finishing 9th at the Capital Hill Volleyball Classic in Washington, DC in February.
The 16U CAPS finished 9th at the 16U Tier 1 Ontario Championship in Waterloo and also had two memorable results at Nationals. First they won silver in Division 2 Tier 1 at the 17U Canadian Open in Ottawa and then gold, and a National Championship banner, in Division 2 Tier 1 at the 16U Canadian West Open in Calgary.
Our 15U and 14U CAPS also had some great performances throughout the season, including participation in their respective Ontario Championships in Waterloo and the 15U Canadian East Open in Moncton for our two 15U teams.
Congratulations are also in order for current 18U CAP Rebecca Crosier and CAPS Alumna Tess Edwards (‘05) who were recently selected to receive Quest For Gold funding. This is a great accomplishment for Tess, currently a member of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and Team Canada’s FISU/B Team, and a particularly impressive achievement for Rebecca, who is the youngest member of the Team Ontario Beach team!
The Club also continues to provide leadership in contributing to volleyball programs at the Region 6, Ontario Volleyball Association and Volleyball Canada levels. I served a fourth term as the Region 6 President, which also allowed me to represent Region 6 at the Board of Directors level of the Ontario Volleyball Association. In addition, our Director of Finance, Phil Mostert, served his second term as the Secretary-Treasurer of Region 6.
The biggest undertaking over the past year was the planning, organizing and staging of the 2009 17U/18U Canadian Open in Ottawa for the second year of a two-year commitment. In the end, a record 216 teams participated in the 2009 17U/18U Canadian Open at five main venues across Ottawa, with Carleton University serving as the main venue. As was done last year, the Mens and Womens 18U National Championship games were played in front of a throng of thousands in the Alumni Hall Gym (Raven’s Nest) at Carleton University and a Rogers Television audience. Overall, there were 847 matches played, 110 referees recruited from all over Canada to officiate these matches, and 550 volunteers recruited, trained and scheduled.
As Chair of the Host Organizing Committee for the event, I again led this Region 6 initiative, which included significant volunteer commitments from the players, parents, executive, coaches, family and friends of the City’s three principal clubs, the National Capitals, Ottawa Kangaroos and Ottawa Mavericks, and to the membership of Les Griffons de l’Outaouais in Gatineau. Without question, this event could never have been staged without the commitment of these volunteers to provide a “best ever” event and memorable experience for all of the participants. A big thank you to all!
In closing, I want to express my best wishes to our graduating players, all who have been great roles models for our younger athletes and set a tremendous example for what can be achieved with hard work, determination and passion for the sport of volleyball. You have been the real leaders of the NCVC and I want to thank you for everything you have done and wish you all the best in your future endeavours both on and off the court. We look forward to welcoming you back some day as part of our growing Alumni program, another important component of our club.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank the Founders of the National Capitals Volleyball Club who provided the foresight, commitment, experience and expertise required to start to the club and then make it as successful as it has been in its first five years of existence. In particular, we are indebted to the four remaining Founders who continue to provide tireless leadership and countless volunteer hours to the club… Paul Edwards, Dan Wolfenden, Cathy O’Doherty, and Bob O’Doherty.
The challenge now will be to map out the next five years for the NCVC over the upcoming months to ensure that we can provide the same programs and opportunities to the next generation of CAPS to excel as we did for the first!” — Bob O’Doherty President, National Capitals Volleyball Club

Thanks very much to Mary Clare Carter for organizing another wonderful evening for the club. Thanks to our emcee, Sylvie Bigras, for doing yet another amazing job of providing her experienced take on what the game of volleyball means today, and what it will mean to the girls as the years pass. Thanks to the staff of Algonquin College for once again doing whatever it took to keep their guests well-fed and happy. Thanks to all those who volunteered their time to make sure the night went off without a hitch, including all our team managers, Jeremy Hannay for the evening’s slide shows, all the players who presented speeches on the evening, and all those who contributed to making sure the yearbook was ready in time for the girls to “customize” their copies at evening’s end. (A PDF of this year’s 5th Anniversary yearbook can be downloaded here.)
It’s been an amazing first 5 years – all the best to everyone as they take a breather over the summer in preparation for yet another epic volleyball experience in 2009-2010!
