Tess Edwards (’05) selected to Team Canada Senior Women’s FISU Team in Winnipeg (PHOTOS)

May 22, 2009 — Former CAP and current University of Ottawa Gee-Gee Tess Edwards (’05), has been named to Team Canada’s National ‘B’ (FISU) team.  Tess competed in a grueling four day tryout at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg with 45 of Canada’s top female volleyball players for the right to make the final roster of either the Senior ‘A’ or Senior ‘B’ team.  15 athletes will be chosen for the FISU (Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire) or ‘B’ team, which will remain to train in Winnipeg towards competing in the World Universiade Games in Belgrade, Serbia from July 1st to 12th.  The 15 ‘A’ team members will train with them in preparation for the Pan Am Cup and NORCECA Championships in Puerto Rico.  According to Volleyball Canada, “This year’s teams are comprised of a combination of young veterans and new athletes possessing potential to lead Canada to berths in the 2010 World Championships and 2012 Olympic Games in London.”

This was Tess’ 5th attempt at making it into the National Team Program after invitations dating back to Youth National Team tryouts – with many of these same girls – back in 2001!  The selection is a fitting reward for a player whose already remarkable 10-year volleyball career has taken her from being the MVP of 16U East National Championships in 2003, to the OVA Evelyn Holick Award in 2005, a two-year stint with the University of Kentucky Wildcats of the NCAA in ’05-’06 and then back to Canada where last season she was named an OUA East Division First Team All Star for her work at the helm of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Tess was relieved and excited to finally get this opportunity to pursue her National Team goals.  “I guess I’d have to say that I’m still in a bit of shock.  You work so long and hard for something... it’s hard to believe I’m actually here now with all these amazing athletes.”  She added, “Sitting down with Lupo (the new National Team Head Coach Arnd Ludwig) and having him actually say ‘yes’ kinda rocked my world.  There’s still work to do, but it’s such an amazing honour to represent Canada – and the CAPS – here in Winnipeg!”

Tess’ former CAPS coach, Cathy O’Doherty, was thrilled for her former team captain.  “Besides her obvious skills as a setter, what has most impressed me over the many years I’ve coached and known Tessa is her determination and perseverance.  She has worked and worked and worked to achieve her utmost goal – playing for Canada.  I can’t think of anyone who deserves this more – congrats Tess – I’m so proud of you!”

Edwards was a member of the CAPS “Original Six” who, along with their 18U teammates, won the city of Ottawa’s only 18U Girls Ontario Championship in the NCVC’s inaugural 2004-2005 campaign.  Tess is older sister to graduating CAP Laura Edwards, who will join her on the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees volleyball team this fall.

Congratulations Tess!
