April 24-26, 2009 — OVA 16U Girls Ontario Championships – Division 1. The 16U CAPS arrived once again at Rim Park, Waterloo. We got there Thursday evening where we had a little team chat at the hotel to review our goals for the weekend and went off to bed nice and early to prepare for some great days of volleyball to come.
We were in the morning wave, so we woke up at 5:30 to get on those sport courts! We knew what we had to do: beat the teams we are supposed to beat, and shock the world! We came out fairly strong with a 2-0 win for our first match of the day against Barrie Elites Black (a special thanks to Warren Taylor for climbing up a wall to save our ball, with the referee close behind). We played some consistent ball, racking up a couple more 2-0 wins against Forest City Blue and Falcons, to end early afternoon with a 3-0 record, happy faces, and a spot in Div. 1.
Another early start began with a banging 2-0 win for the 16U girls against Georgetown Impact. We took a hard 1-2 loss in the 2nd match against Durham Attack Black 15U, which we learned from. We had to improve our communication and keep our serves hard and strategic (where Linden wants). We came back fairly hard with another 2-0 win against Niagara Rapids Black to end off the day. We went back to the hotel where we had the afternoon to ourselves. We stayed off our feet, chillaxed as a team, and went to bed super early to prepare for the final day of battle.
A nice Tim’s breakfast, and a team talk got us psyched for our crossover match against Ottawa Mavericks Ambush. We went in feeling confident, and believing in ourselves, with some nerves that were easily swiped away. We came out with a strong win in the first set, but we began to lose focus and fell just short, with a tough loss in the next two sets to finish tied for 9th in the province.
All in all, we played hard and learned from our mistakes. We will use the experience for our upcoming tournaments. I think we all realize how important mental focus and executing the fundamental skills are now, especially as the matches get tougher. We reached some of our main team goals: being in Tier 1, and having fun!
Thanks a bunch to Linden and Devon for coaching and motivating us all the way through. Thank you to all the parents for the driving, lineskeeping, scoring, cheering, feeding, icing, and climbing this weekend – none of this would be possible without you.
Oh yeah, oh yeah CAPS!!!
