18U CAPS face one Storm after another on Day 2 at Canadian Open in Ottawa(PHOTOS) By Paul Edwards, with photos by Eva Edwards
May 2, 2009 — Day 2 of the Volleyball Canada 18U Girls Canadian Open in Ottawa matched the girls up against some nasty weather in the form of two Storm fronts from Ontario and Manitoba.
Match #1 faced the girls up against their perennial foes, Aurora Storm from Newmarket. Set 1 was yet another classic dustup between these two well-matched teams, with the girls battling from the front, only to lose a tight one by 2. Set 2 saw the girls repeat their form from Day 1 – a great performance followed up by a loss of focus, resulting in a match that started well but ended in frustration.
Match #2 placed the girls in the center of a Storm from Brandon, Manitoba – a 6'6" storm by the name of Tabitha Love. The free-swinging LS and future Minnesota Golden Gopher started slow, having a tough time against an aggressive CAPS block and some structured defensive play, but once she found her rhythm, she also found the floor. Our girls played some spirited ball but fell to the top-seeded Manitobans in straight sets.
So, a tough draw left the girls working for a good seed in what would now be a battle to claim Canada#11 status in their final tournament together. Their final match of the day started slow, but the girls quickly reset their game and made relatively swift work of Lynx Rouge from Quebec.
The 18U CAPS play next at 9:45 am on Sunday morning against the winner of Queens Extreme (Okotoks, AB) vs. CVC Radz Gold (Regina, SK) on Court 13 in the IceHouse at Carleton University. Enjoy your last day on the court together ladies!
