April 11-13, 2009 — OVA 18U Girls Ontario Championships-Division II at Rim Park, Waterloo were a blast! The 16U CAPS came to shock the world, and we accomplished exactly that. It was a wonderful Easter weekend full of laughs, cuddling, scarlet, grape lady, dancing to “nobody’s perfect” and of course, volleyball. Thank you so much Linden for your hard work and patience throughout this weekend. Thank you parents (and many fans) for your driving expertise, ice bagging skills, Swiss Chalet runs and loud cheering – we could not have done it without you. Thank you very much Jeremy, Chris and Matt for your support in the last match. Cathy, it was great to have you with us – just like old times! We missed you Dev.
The 16U CAPS arrived in Waterloo on Friday, some earlier than others – cough, Ariff, cough. We began with a nice sit down dinner at Montana’s, followed by a “our goals” talk from Linden later on. Back at the Cambridge hotel and conference centre, the girls got settled in their rooms for a nice ‘Good Friday sleep’.
We were put in the afternoon wave, so the girls had a nice sleep in on Saturday. We went to Cora’s for breakfast and proceeded to the gym to watch the 18Us play. Before our 3:30 p.m. game, an awards ceremony took place in the main gym. Our own 18U CAP, Lauren Carter was awarded the Evelyn Holick Award. Congrats LC, we are all very proud of you! After the ceremony, it was game time.
Our first match was against the Waterloo Tigers. We came out very strong in the first set with great passing and solid offense. The second set was not as good, but we beat the Tigers in two straight. Our next game was not for 2 hours, so the girls decided to go grab some subs and get some fresh air. At 7:00 p.m., the 16U Capitals played BVC. Our free ball passing and serve-receive was average, therefore BVC beat us in 3 sets. Our last game of the day was against South Coast Wave. The play was scrappy, but we played some strong defence and forced them to make mistakes with our quick and powerful attacks. The 16Us beat S.C. Wave in two sets. After an afternoon/night in the gym, the girls went right to bed when we arrived back at the hotel.
The girls got to sleep in again Easter Sunday because we were placed in the afternoon wave. Once we were up, a member of the team decided to get her face painted with a giant volleyball and NCVC sign, and several other girls got CAPS designs painted on their legs. After breakfast, we went to the gym to watch the 18U girls play Aurora Storm. We were glad we had come because it turned out to be a great game to watch and to learn from!
Our first game of the day was not until 4:10 p.m, so we had a relatively long wait between the 18U game and our own. It was a bit of a challenge to keep warm and energized at the gym, which showed in our game against Peterborough. We were slow to start, but after a while, we gained confidence and beat them in straight sets. Later, we played Etobicoke. It was a solid game by the 16U girls, with strong offense and defence, defeating Etobicoke in two. Our final match of the day was against the Ottawa Kangaroos. This was the most talented team we had played all weekend, so we had to step up our defence and run some quick offensive plays to beat them in two sets. We arrived back at the hotel late on Easter Sunday night, iced our sore spots for a bit and were off to bed.
We woke up early on Monday, grabbed a quick Tim Horton’s breakfast and were off to the gym. We played South Coast Wave for a second time in the quarter-finals. The girls were forced to ignore some of the interferences during the game, but we won the game in two sets. Our semi-finals were against Hawks Black. We were up 24-17 when the Hawks came back and the 16U CAPS could not get a pass. We won the first set by a hair, and then we also won the second. Off to the gold medal game!
The finals were against Maverick Stampede. It was a great game with great offense and defence from both teams. The game went to a third set, but the Mavericks pulled through in the end. Congratulations Mavs!
Overall, it was a great weekend for the 16U National Capitals. We achieved the goals we set at the beginning of the tournament and we left Waterloo with silver medals around our necks – satisfied with our play (especially the last game of the day) and proud to be CAPS. 16U Provincials, here we come. Ladies, let’s shock the world...
