CAPS veteran Lauren Carter receives prestigious Evelyn Holick Award(PHOTOS) By Paul Edwards
April 16, 2009 — Seven-year club volleyball veteran and one of our original CAPS, 18U Girls team Captain Lauren Carter was honoured with the OVA’s highest honour for a female volleyball player, the Evelyn Holick Award, at a ceremony at 18U Ontario Championships in Waterloo this past weekend.
The OVA hands out this honour annually to an athlete who “demonstrates the qualities of determination, leadership, athletic ability, sportsmanship and fair play.” Lauren certainly fits the bill – her wonderful smile has brightened the club volleyball scene for so long now (see photos below). A 3-time team captain, 3-time winner of the OVA Award of Excellence and a member of numerous Regional and beach teams, Lauren has set the highest standard for hard work, dedication to her teammates and coaches, and for the competitive yet friendly spirit shown before, during and after matches – whether in victory or in defeat. She is without a doubt the exact type of young lady the OVA had in mind when they created this award.
According to NCVC Director of Volleyball Programs Cathy O’Doherty, “I have had the pleasure of knowing Lauren for the past six years – and even got to coach her in her 15U year! Lauren is the ultimate CAP – passionate and driven to excel, yet compassionate and caring to all those around her. I am so proud of her and thrilled that she has been recognized for her love of the game and contribution to the volleyball community. Way to go Lauren!”
18U CAPS Head Coach Jeremy Hannay adds, “I can say without hesitation that this was one of my favorite moments in coaching. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Lauren and watching her evolve into an exceptional young lady whose natural leadership abilities and high energy benefit our team, the club, and community at large. Lauren has a gift for lifelong leadership in sport: her strength is not that she is in sport but that the sport is in her. Quite simply, Lauren is an amazing young lady. We’re very proud of you, Lauren!”
Lauren joins CareerCAP Tess Edwards (’05) as the second National Capital in just 5 years to take home this prestigious honour.
Congratulations Miss Carter – the entire NCVC family is indeed very proud of you!
