February 28, 2009 – The parents, coaches and the players all felt that flood of adrenaline and emotion when the referee blew that whistle.  The score was 25-23. We, the players, felt that that game against the Maverick Colts was the best all season.  Going into playoffs as the last in our pool, and having to play the first team from the other pool, we did not expect much.  The team pulled together after the short lunch break and used all the skills we had.  Tips were all covered.  Serve receives were to the setter.  The sets were perfect (thanks Amy :).  Balls were attacked and volleys placed.  Serves?  No problemo.  It was an altogether amazing game.  Next game was played with the same intensity, but we got behind on serve-receive, resulting in a third set.  The Burgies played hard but eventually lost to the Mavericks 6-15.

Right after the Mavericks game, we (the Burgies) were competing with Peterborough Thunder for the chance to play for fifth.  We were off to a good start, bringing the momentum from the game with the Mavs, using serve-receive and strong attacks to our advantage.  In the second set, either from weariness or panicking, we lost our heads and tumbled into a 13-25 loss.  During the third set, we shook off the previous game’s mistakes and gained an eight point lead.  However, due to the last four crucial points, we were not able to win.  It was as if we were an entirely different team.  All the little mistakes added up and left us with a disappointing 11-15 loss to Peterborough.

Earlier in the day, the CAPS had played the Akwasasne Soaring Eagles.  We were a little timid and afraid to talk.  All three games were close, but Akwasasne won the match 2-1.  We learned to keep our chins high and come back in the next game.

Next up was Durham Attack.  This strong team, which served deep and hit hard, was met with a challenge from the Burgies during the first game, which was eventually won by Durham, 25-20.  Unfortunately, serve-receive was weak during the next game, although the effort was there.

Peterborough Thunder
was the final team in our pool.  We had shrunk into our little holes again and were lacking the talking.  Chatting ain’t so simple on the court.  Both games Peterborough took the cake, but the Burgies struck back in the playoffs.

With the injuries and absences from this tournament, Burgies – with eight players (one with a hurt knee) – put up a valiant fight.  Remember girls, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
