February 28, 2009 — After a long drive to Kitchener Friday night (luckily missing the bad weather), we started our day at the OVA 18U Girls Open Trillium against the Mavericks Stampede. We started off strong, taking the first set 25-18. We let our energy down a little and lost the second set, forcing us to go to a third. In the third set, we fought strong and did our best, but we came out unsuccessful, losing the match. Match two went a little better. We played our best against Woodstock Warriors and took the first set relatively quickly. When it came to set two, it looked good at the beginning. At 24-14, we thought we’d won when the ball hit the ground, but the ref disagreed and the game was still on. After that play, it unfortunately took us 6 points to finally finish them off which placed us second in our pool. The next match against Ganaraska Wolves would decide whether we made it into the top eight. We played great! We really fought for every point and it showed! We took the first set 25-9 and the second 25-12. We definitely earned our spot in the top eight! Our quarterfinal game was against Roos-17U. They had some strong hitters and really big blocks. We fought as hard as we could, but they took the first set pretty easily. Next set, we fought even harder and got on a couple of good runs, but we still couldn’t catch up and ended up losing the match. By the time we reached our final game against the Diamonds, we were pretty tired. We had really low energy and we couldn’t pick ourselves up. We lost the first set pretty fast, but in the second set, we fought a little more. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull through and ended up losing, placing us 7th. Overall, I think the tournament went pretty well – considering we were playing up 2 years! One thing we need to work on is our energy level because if we had that for the whole day, we could have beaten any of the teams there. Thanks to our photographer (Arif), videographer (Lianne) and linesperson (Paul), who also substituted as chauffeurs and fans. Finally, a big thank-you to Louis Lemay who did an amazing job as our substitute coach for the weekend!
