February 21, 2009 — Our Baby CAPS hit the ground running at the OVA 14U Girls Hawkins Cup Zone F in Kingston! Despite everybody’s early start to the day, they were on their toes and playing well from game one.
The girls first came up against Ottawa’s Maverick Rattlers, defeating them 25-20 and 25-16. The second set against Northumberland Breakers B kept the CAPS working hard. They won the first game 25-17 but things were looking dim in the second, when the girls fell behind by twelve points. Some awesome serving and quick moves brought them back into the game and, in a nail-biter, they won the set by a score of 26-24.
The streak continued into their next match against the Renfrew County Knights, when they cleaned up in the first game 25-9 and then fought out a second win in a well-played game that ended 25-22. This left our Baby CAPS ranked first in their pool which put them up against the Knights once again in the afternoon playoff round. Again, the CAPS came through with some excellent plays and brilliant serves. The match went to our CAPS 2-1, by scores of 25-14, 21-25 and a heart-stopping 15-9.
The final round for the top spot matched us up against Maverick Rattlers for a second time. Despite their hard work and admirable efforts, the Rattlers came back in force and our Baby CAPS lost the sets, 21-25 and 14-25, to come in second overall and capture their first team medal – a silver!
Our congratulations go out to all the players, and many thanks to coaches Louis and Julie whose hard work is letting our talented young ladies shine!
