18U Girls head to St. Catharines for McGregor Cup(PHOTOS) By Paul Edwards, with photos by Diane Watt
January 17, 2009 — The CAPS 18U Girls headed southwest to the Niagara region to participate in the OVA 18U Girls McGregor Cup – Premier Division at Brock University in St. Catharines.
Starting the day with two teammates out of action, the girls did their best to battle the opposition on a day when – perhaps – the stars were just not aligned for them. After a split in pool play, the girls ended up going to 3 sets in a hard-fought battle with DRVC, which ended in the Whitby team’s favour. This crossover loss meant that the CAPS would have to regroup for their next event, the Bugarski Cup in Trenton on February 7th, taking their game to the competition at the newly-nicknamed Championship level. This is certainly not a challenge that the girls haven’t faced and overcome before – just a hiccup on the road to their major destinations this spring.
Thanks go out to our dedicated 18U coaching staff, to Kerry for his organizational skills, to Diane Watt for taking the time to take all these wonderful photos, to former teammate Kaleigh Potts for doing a spot-on job of lineskeeping, to all the parents who made the long trek around the lake to St. Catharines to support and cheer on our girls, and thanks to all for doing whatever it took to get everyone home in one piece despite that nasty snowstorm.
