January 10, 2009 — This past weekend the ‘Baby CAPS’ travelled to Brighton for their first official tournament of the season, the OVA 14U Girls McGregor Cup – Zone F. Unfortunately, winter holidays, coupled with poor weather conditions in January, resulted in the girls having only one practice since mid-December. Despite this, they demonstrated steady improvement over the course of the day and enjoyed many close matches in their morning games against the Northumberland Breakers (13-25, 23-25) and the Ottawa Mavericks (19-25, 21-25).
In the afternoon re-pool, the CAPS savoured a well-earned victory over the Ottawa Kangaroos (25-17, 25-7). This was followed by a hard-fought loss to DRVC Orange (11-25, 12-25). In the final match of the day they found themselves squaring off, once again, against the Northumberland Breakers. Following a 16-25 loss in game one, the CAPS rallied to a 27-25 victory in game two. The tie-breaker resulted in an extremely well-played 12-15 loss, leaving them in 7th place overall.
Fundraising efforts will begin next week in order to purchase a portable defibrillator for the team parents who were seen at various times biting their nails, pacing, and generally looking both anxious and relieved... eventually.
