CAPS 16Us: Triumphant in Trenton!(PHOTOS) By Nicole Rainville, with photos by Lianne Normand
December 6, 2008 — We had an early start on Saturday, making our way to the OVA 16U Girls Provincial Cup - Zone F in Trenton, Ontario. We began very lethargic in our opening match against the Belleville Ravens but quickly picked up the tempo after a few points, winning 25-9. We got a huge lead in the second set when Kelsey served 24 consecutive serves, leading us to a 25-2 victory! Very impressive.
In our second match, we played our cross-town rivals, the Maverick Outlaws HP and lost the first set by a devastating 13-25 score. We came back and won the second set 25-18 with a firing force. Great defense and exceptional blocking and setting made for a winning combination. We also successfully pounded several balls onto the Mavericks side of the court from the middle. We moved to a tie-breaking third set and lost 6-15. Despite the third set loss, our team should feel quite triumphant in taking a game from the Mavs. Watch out... we’ll be back!
Our third match was against our own CAPS 15U Burgundy team. We won the first set 25-8. During the second, we started off strong, lost steam, but squeaked out a 25-17 win.
We had a two match break to strategize how we were going to play our next match. After a long period of waiting we were pumped and ready to get back onto the court. Our next match was against Pegasus RA from Kingston. They looked like a tough team according to our coach. After a great warmup we were ready for action. With a positive final statement from Coach Linden, “Our last game always has to be our best, end on a good note ladies,” we got on the court and won both sets, 25-13 and 25-15, hammering hits and serves at the opposition with every point. Definitely our best match of the day.
After a long day of serving, hitting, passing and setting, we had a final meeting with the team and coaching staff. After 10½ hours of astonishing volleyball, it was time to return to Ottawa. Thanks to Linden and Devon for their coaching support and to the parents who sat cheering on the benches. See you next weekend, on the courts in Kingston!
