November 5th, 2008 — The National Capitals Volleyball Club held its 5th Anniversary CAPS Kickoff Wednesday evening in the St. Pius X cafeteria. The Kickoff is our means of bringing the membership of the club together every year in order that the players, coaches and parents have an informal opportunity to get to know each other a little better before another season of travel and competition begins.
What seemed to have been the largest crowd to-date started the evening chowing down on a veritable feast of appetizers, main course dishes, salads and desserts. Club Vice-President Dan Wolfenden then got the evening’s ‘business’ underway, welcoming the players and all in attendance to yet another season of fantastic CAPS volleyball, before taking a moment to introduce and thank the club’s executive. NCVC Director of Volleyball Programs Cathy O’Doherty then introduced the coaches, who in turn came up on stage to introduce each of their players. But, let’s face it, the real business of the evening was the gear. Each player was handed their special bundle of two gleaming new Mizuno game jerseys, spandex, socks, team colour-coordinated zip-up hoodie and matching black warmup pants. A few door prizes were drawn, then off to the gym went the entire crew for a demonstration of the intensity of high-end volleyball with the CAPS 18U Girls. The veterans of the club demonstrated pepper, proper stretching techniques and then settled into a lively scrimmage directed by 18U Head Coach Jeremy Hannay. Great job ladies!
The Kickoff ended with all the players mixing together to enjoy a light scrimmage with vets and rookies sharing the court for a little informal volleyball fun.
Many thanks to Director of Special Events Mary Clare Carter and her energetic staff for doing such a great job of organizing this wonderful event. Thanks to all the parents for – hands down – the best selection of grub to-date, and thanks to Dan Wolfenden for being our emcee and for preparing the A-V eye candy for the evening. Now... hi-ho, hi-ho – it’s off to work you go! Have a great season ladies!
