February 9, 2008 - The 16U CAPS headed west to Pickering last weekend to participate in OVA 16U Girls Bugarski Cup - Tier 1.  The CAPS entered the tournament as the fourth seed with hopes of winning a medal in Tier 1 OVA play.

The CAPS first opponent of the day was the Defensa volleyball club out of Burlington.  Defensa started the first set extremely strong, at one point holding a ten-point advantage over the CAPS, but midway through the first set, the CAPS came alive and rallied to win 25-22.  The second set was very exciting and resulted in a Defensa victory, 27-25.  The third set was much like the second but this time the CAPS came out on top 15-13.

Next up in pool play was the fifth seed, Durham Attack.  This was the first meeting of the two teams this season.  Attack hit hard throughout the match, easily winning the first set.  The girls did not let the result of the first game get to them and worked hard in the second set, staying within a couple of points.  However it was not to be, and Attack won the match in straight sets, 25-11, 25-22.  At the end of pool play, the CAPS were second in the "D" Pool.

Following a two game break, the CAPS were back on the court in the all-important crossover match, where the winning team advances to the quarter-finals and a loss results in a final game for a 9th or 11th place (tie) finish.  This match saw the CAPS playing the girls from Forest City.  This team was solid from the first ball and defeated the CAPS in straight sets, 25-20, 25-13.

With one more game to determine placement, the CAPS ended the day as they started, facing Defensa.  The afternoon match looked very much like the morning match, with the CAPS taking the first set (25-19), Defensa taking the second (25-20) and the CAPS winning the third set (15-6).

And so, a little disappointed, the 16U CAPS headed home with a ninth place finish.  The weather didn't cooperate and the drive was slow but such is winter driving in Eastern Ontario.  Thanks again to coaches Linden and Bruno and to all parents for the late night driving.  The girls will be back with a vengeance next weekend looking for a first or second place finish to secure a Tier 2 placement for the 17U Provincial Championships.

6-1-3 NC!!!!!!!
