January 19, 2008 - For a second straight weekend, the 16U CAPS traveled west along the 401, this time stopping at Trenton for the OVA 17U Challenge Cup - Zone C.  The CAPS entered the tournament as the second seed, with the goal of achieving a first place finish and moving up to 17U Tier 2 OVA competition.

The CAPS started the morning strong with straight set wins against SDG Spartiates (25-12, 25-20).  The winning continued throughout pool play with a second match victory against the Ganaraska Wolves (25-17, 25-20) and a third match victory against the Ottawa Kangaroos 16U (25-19, 25-22).  At the end of pool play, the CAPS were exactly where they needed to be, in first place in Pool "B".

On the other court, the "A" pool results at the end of pool play were somewhat surprising.  In the final match of pool play, the 4th seed host, Astros de Marc Garneau, upset the first seed Ottawa Maverick Black Jacks in three sets, moving the Black Jacks to second and leaving Attack Red in 4th place.  This set up a quarter-final match between the CAPS and Durham Attack Red.  The CAPS' winning momentum continued and the CAPS took the match in two sets (25-19, 26-24).

After a one match break, the CAPS returned to the court for a semi-final match against the Ottawa Maverick Black Jacks.  The first set went much the same way as all of the sets earlier in the day, with the CAPS winning 25-21.  But the Black Jacks were determined to find their way back to Tier 2 and battled hard to take the second, 25-14.  So, with first-place on the line, the girls entered their first deciding set of the day.  The Black Jacks came out strong and, at the half, led 8-4.  The CAPS rallied but fell short, ultimately losing the third set 12-15.

So, knowing that the ultimate goal of a first-place finish was not to be, the CAPS played their final match of the day against the 16U Kangaroos.  The Kangaroos won the first set 26-24, but the CAPS would not let disappointment get the better of them and rallied to win the next two sets (25-22, 15-6), achieving a third place bronze medal finish.

Watch for the 16U CAPS to come out swinging at the OVA 17U Bugarski Cup zone tournament in February, with one more chance at a Tier 2 placement for 17U Provincial Championships.  Thanks Linden and Bruno for your efforts and to the CAPS 16U parents who cheered loud and proud.  Go CAPS!!!!!!!
