December 1, 2007 - The OVA 17U Girls McGregor Cup - Tier 1 began with one of the slowest starts to a tournament weekend that I've ever had... all in a car driving down the 401 in a blizzard.  Apparently even leaving early didn't help.  The earliest any of us got to Scarborough was at about 10:30 pm.

We all met at the gym Saturday morning for 9:00 am.  After a rigorous workout we settled into our first game against Peel Selects 91.  It was a great way to start the day winning 2-1.  The next match was against Mississauga Pakmen and it  didn't go quite as well - we ended up losing 0-2.  I personally don't remember much of this game as Jorie smoked me in the head with one of her KILLER hits... pay you back some day Jor!

Next, we took on South County Bandits in the crossover.  We needed the win in order to stay in Tier 1... and we did it!  We won both sets, 25-16 and 25-18.  Throughout this game we had our ups and downs but still succeeded in the end.

Aurora Storm were our next opponents.  They gave us a tough battle, forcing us to keep our heads above water in the first set, a set we lost 15-25.  In the second set there were some great rallies, hits and digs.  We fought even harder but lost 22-25.

Our final action of the day was a rematch against Peel Selects 91, for 5th or 6th place.  We played three close sets, losing the first set by 2, winning the second by 3 but losing the third by 4.

While we have some work to do as a team, there were some great plays by everybody and I'm proud to play with all of you girls.  Also, we all appreciate those parents who cautiously drove us to Scarborough through such bad weather.

Coach Matt's Quote of the Tourney:  "It's early in the season - we did some things well and there are some things we have to work on, but it is a good starting point."
