Welcome to the new CAPS website for 2007-2008!
by Paul Edwards

June 15, 2007 - It's been three years since the overall design concept for the just-retired CAPS website was created.  It may have seemed different from Years One to Two, but it was basically the same 04-05 design, flipped and supercharged with colour in 05-06, and then superficially tweaked again in 06-07.  Part of that can be blamed on success - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" - but mostly it was just because these things just take up way too much time, and there are only so many hours in the day that can be sacrificed for volleyball.  But it's an important time for the CAPS, so - a few months back - I spent a day or two designing and did my best to start from scratch, in an attempt to freshen up the club's image on the World Wide Web.

The main goal of the exercise was to bring our best foot forward; to make sure that the people about which we are most proud - our girls - are front & centre.  To that end, the new site is more player-centric.  From our forever-rotating player and team images on the main page (yes, they will change as I have time to update them), to the fun and colourful story blocks on the home page, to some of the new features coming this fall - every effort has been made to make the site a visual reward for all the hard work our players (and coaches) do throughout the season.

All I ask, as designer and editor, is that every member of the club - from players and coaches, to parents and volunteers - take the time to go through the entire site at least once, familiarizing yourself with what it has to offer, in the hope that it will serve its purpose and help our members efficiently charge their way through yet another crazy club volleyball season.

Coming this fall:

  • Uploadable Photo Galleries - The ability to add your own photos (those fit to print!) directly to website stories posted about your team
  • Expanded Individual Player Profiles - Everything (fit to print!) you ever wanted to know about our CAPS players
  • WIKI Planners  - A new means of taking the "email" (and much of the stress) out of team planning

Other features to look out for:

  • Most recent News stories are now at the top of the page - 6 at any one time - with new stories being added at far left
  • Stories will continue to be colour-coded, as per the team menu section in the left-hand sidebar (although this won't take effect until new teams are named in September - for now, all stories will reside in the "Club News" archive)
  • Look for current events of interest in either the lower portion of the left-hand sidebar, or under "2007-2008" in the black main header
  • Updated Alumni section - one-click access to each of our 20 Alumni's latest post-CAPS adventures
  • Updated Archive section - remember that access to our first 3 seasons on the web, plus PDFs of all 3 club yearbooks, are always a click away, in our Archive

Many thanks to Gleb Sturov for all the patience and hard work he has brought to bear on the technical research required to bring all of these new design ideas of mine to life.  Now please, enjoy the new site, and let us know what you think when you have a moment!
