- 5 weeks, 2 dozen enthusiastic
volleyball players, one great time! I wasn't sure what to
expect when Coach Cathy O'Doherty first asked me to help her run
the Second Annual CAPS FUNdamentals Camp, but once I stepped
into the gym the first week, I knew it would be a great time.
The girls were all very focussed, super energetic, and ready to
learn.
There were girls who never played before
and others who, despite their youth, were little 'veterans' on the
court.
It's such a privilege to be able to work
with young girls who are just beginning their volleyball journey
because it takes me back to when I first began and reminds me what
this sport is all about.
I personally enjoyed introducing the girls
to one of my favourite drills, "Dead Fish". It cracked me up
when we would continue the games to best out of 3, then best out of 5,
then ... "just one more at the end of camp ... please?".
4-on-4 'Queen's Court' saw the girls creating some amusing team
names. My favourite? "Clueless." At the time, it
didn't crack me up, but when I asked, "Who is Hawks? Who is
White Tees? Who is CLUELESS?", we all had a good
laugh!!
Hopefully I'll see you girls in the
future. Keep working on your skills, keep supporting your
teammates and, remember ladies...
... elbows nice and high for your serve
...
... thumbs down when you pass
...
... concentrate on footwork for every
approach ...
... keep your hands open when you hit
...
... never let a ball hit the floor without
going for it, and ...
... call that ball!!
