February 10, 2007 - Our second trip to beautiful St. Jean de Brebeuf High School in Woodbridge for the OVA 18U Girls Bugarski Cup/Tier 1 was full of high hopes and renewed desire to compete and advance to a playoff round.  Our Capitals 18U girls were pooled with 2 other teams: Aurora Storm Rage and Burlington Blaze to battle it out during round robin play.

The 18U CAPS successfully ended round robin play first in their pool, defeating Burlington Blaze (25-17, 25-20) and Aurora Storm Rage (25-15, 25-21).  Quarter-final play would match the CAPS up against Waterloo Tigers, resulting in a disappointing loss in 2 games (19-25, 21-25).

The CAPS were now facing Georgian Bay Vista to advance for a chance to compete for 5th place in the tournament.  The girls improved their play during this match en route to a 25-12, 25-15 victory.

The final match of the day paired the CAPS with DRVC.  Our mental inability to overcome errors would prove costly as DRVC handed the girls another loss: 17-25, 25-15, 15-10.  The girls finished their tournament in 6th place, only the second time this season they have finished out of the medals.

Coach O'Doherty had a very clear assessment of the weekend's results.  "These girls know exactly what they need to do to climb back into the medals at this most competitive end of the OVA: they need to pass and they need to communicate.  They've always had the physicality - they just need to be able to run their plays off serve-receive and then work as a team to finish.  That'll be our focus as we head down the stretch."

Thank you to Uncle Gary and Aunt Nancy DeBoer (Kalyn's family) who opened their home to 16 of us, and were the gracious and generous hosts of a delicious, early morning breakfast.  Thanks also to Coaches Cathy and Matt for their continuing dedication to our 18U Girls.
