February 1, 2007 - The NCVC held
its 3rd Annual CAPS Coaching Clinic at St. Pius X this past
Thursday afternoon. The 3 hour session was attended by
approximately 2 dozen area elementary and secondary school coaches and
teachers, as well as a few university students - all looking to
absorb as much knowledge as possible of the ins and outs of the game
from the CAPS' staff and players. Coaches Cathy O'Doherty
and Matt Harris, as well as University of Ottawa Gee-Gee
Tess Edwards, used current CAPS veterans to help demonstrate the dos
and don'ts of this somewhat challenging game we call volleyball.
Our CAPS demonstrated warmup drills, setting, serving and passing
techniques, as well as floor position and game strategies to the eager
participants.
"It's really gratifying to see so many coaches coming out
every year to our clinics, and to know that we can have some small
impact on how the game is played across the city," commented Coach
O'Doherty. "It's easy to forget how tough a game this is
to teach in the early stages - all of our local coaches are to be
commended for their dedication and patience, and for taking the time
to make sure they are passing on the right skills."
Much thanks to Coach Cathy for organizing this free clinic, and
to Matt, Tess, Laura Carmanico, Lauren Carter, Laura Edwards, Sarah
Fetterly, Kalyn Mostert, Steph McGuinty and Erin O'Doherty for
showcasing all their hard-earned technical expertise to the coaches in
attendance.
