January 20, 2007 - The OVA 14U
Girls Hawkins Cup/Zone D in Kingston gave the CAPS 14U girls the
opportunity to put to use some of the skills they have been working on
since their last tournament on December 2nd. After a perfect
drive down the 401 and, with all three coaches on the bench, our first
match started at 9:00am against the 6th seed Maverick Rattlers
(Ottawa). The first set was all about the serve - the CAPS came
out strong and won 25-10. The second set saw our serve-receive
challenged by their big server, and the Mavs went ahead 13-12, but the
girls dug down deep and pulled out a match win, 25-13.
Our second match was against the 7th
place Kingston Cats. The CAPS came out flat, losing the
first set 19-25. The second game was a back-and-forth
error-filled set with the CAPS winning by a close 26-24 score.
In the third, the girls looked crisp again, winning 15-6.
Our third match was against the 3rd seed
Ganaraska Wolves. The girls had everything working well in
the first set, winning 25-18. But the Wolves did no wrong in the
second, with good serves and great attacks taking them to a 25-18
victory. In the deciding set, the CAPS looked defeated before
they started, losing 10-15. This placed the girls 2nd in their
pool.
On to the playoff round against the
Peterborough Thunder, with the girls playing steady ball and
winning the match in two straight sets, 25-20 and 25-23.
The semis proved to be the most difficult
and the most exciting match of the day, against the 1st seed team,
the Maverick Gold Diggers (Ottawa). Both teams played a
great first set, with the CAPS winning by another tight 26-24 score.
The second set had some concentration lapses for the CAPS, and they
went on to lose 19-25. But the girls proved in the 3rd set that
they were not to be beaten. With great serving and great
attacks, they won convincingly, 15-7.
So it was on to the finals against the
Ottawa Kangaroos. The girls could do very little wrong in
this match - everything worked in every combination. The CAPS
won the match 25-11 and 25-12 to win the GOLD medal!! This
victory vaulted the CAPS into Tier 2 for their last tournament before
Provincials. Way to go girls!!
Thanks so much to Rebecca, Linden and Mike for coaching our girls
along their winning path.
