August 4, 2006 - The road to Beijing starts in
Ottawa for the Canadian men's national volleyball team. The nation's
capital will be hosting the inaugural Anton Furlani International
Cup - a four-team, four-day elite international tournament at
Scotiabank Place from Sept. 6 to 9, 2006. The event will provide
the Canadians with the chance to test themselves against some of the
world's best volleyball talent as they gear up for the 2008 Olympics
in China, as well as this November's World Championships in
Japan.
The Canadian team, currently ranked 13th in the world, will
contest three days of round robin play (from Wednesday to Friday)
against 2005 World League bronze-medallist Cuba (currently ranked
10th), Argentina (6th) and Tunisia (17th) with the medal matches
scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Each session at Scotiabank Place
will feature double-headers, at 6 and 8 p.m. on the weeknights, and 2
and 4 p.m. for the finals on Saturday.
