December 17, 2005 - The 14U
CAPS headed to Trenton in the early morning hours of December 17th to
their first 15U tournament of the season, the OVA 15U Girls
McGregor Cup - Zone C. Given the time of year, it was
decided that a "day trip" would be best - little did we know we'd
be in the medal rounds and arriving home very late!
The CAPS placed 2nd in their pool of 3,
having lost to Durham Attack Red 15U (0-3), and winning
against Ottawa Kangaroos 15U (3-0). One of the CAPS (who
shall remain anonymous!) commented on how tall the Attack Red girls
were for 14U. They were reminded that they were, in fact,
a 15U team and the girls were playing in a 15U
tournament!! This put a different perspective on the rest
of the day!
Placing 2nd in pool found the CAPS facing
off against Durham Attack Black 14U. The girls were
clearly intimidated to be playing the top team in 14U Tier 1.
The first set gave Black the win and the CAPS left the court looking
somewhat frustrated. Whatever Coach Noor said to them we will
never know, but 6 "changed" girls came back on the court for set 2
looking strong, determined, and unstoppable. Their win in the
2nd set ensured a tie-breaker to 15, and more tense moments for the
parents in the stands. Clearly, the momentum swing in our favour
had shaken the Attack girls and the CAPS came out in the 3rd set ready
to win Š and win they did!
Coach Noor commented "This was an
all-round outstanding performance with all players playing to the best
of their ability. Both teams played excellent volleyball and it
could have been anybody's game. The team was overjoyed - this
is the finest moment of their season so far".
The semi-finals found the CAPS playing
the Ottawa Kangaroos 15U girls once again. Although the
match wasn't as solid as that in pool play, the CAPS still managed to
win the match 2-1. Now it was off to the gold medal
match!
The final was a déjà vu from the
morning, and put the girls right back against Durham Attack Red
15U. The team was very tired so it proved to be an easy win
for the Red, 2-0. Always looking for the "silver" lining,
the girls were delighted with their silver medal and their play for
the day.
Coach Noor was delighted with the results from the day. "A
silver medal far exceeded our expectation". Jamie
Bullbrook felt "the team really came together not only as friends,
but as a strong volleyball team. We played with confidence and did our
best to keep our energy up all day. I'm proud to say that we
pulled this off with a silver!" Kristen Ritchie commented that
"The tournament was such a great experience for our team. We
never gave up. Winning the match against Durham Attack Black
14Us was the best volleyball experience I have ever had. We all
worked so hard and it showed us that if you put your best effort into
something, anything is possible! Every person on the team
contributed to our silver medal."
Thank you to our drivers, lunch preparers and cheering squad.
Thanks to the girls for showing just how great a team they are.
And last, but not least, our special thanks to Coach Noor, for his
dedication and commitment to the 14U girls.
The CAPS look forward to their next
tournament on January 14th which will see them in Ajax at the OVA
14U Girls Hawkins Cup - Tier 2 (formerly the Challenge
Cup).
