October 29, 2005 - This year's edition of the 18U National Capitals girls team has been practicing hard since September - they were very ready to compete and proved it at the OVA's first tournament of the year, the OVA 18U Girls Provincial Cup - Zone D, held in Kingston on October 22nd.  (Editor's note: The 18U girls actually saw their first action of the season in Gatineau at the Québec/Ontario Challenge a few weeks back.)

The first match of the tournament represented a great start to the OVA season, as all the girls played well and took their first win of the day.  The next 2 games saw similar results, and the CAPS finished the day 1st in pool.

In the first playoff match against hometown Pegasus, the CAPS won in straight sets to advance to the semi-finals against another Ottawa team, the Mavericks.  The CAPS came into the match very focused and went on a great roll, winning 2 straight to advance to the finals against the always-strong DRVC.  DRVC were pumped to play the CAPS, but came up against a team who had been improving all tournament and had saved their best play for last!  The CAPS came out on top, won the first tournament of the year, and earned their spot in Tier 1.  Congratulations Girls!!

Coach Matt Harris employed an interesting tournament strategy on Saturday, dividing the team into two squads, each sharing only the setter.  Each line-up played 1 of 2 sets, and the strategy proved effective as the girls did not drop a set all day long.  "The girls played awesome all day!  It's great to get this first tournament behind us - now we can focus on training hard in preparation for Tier 1", commented Coach Harris.

Thanks to all the parents that came out to support the team. You were awesome!
