June 16, 2005 -  You want to work for NASA?  You want to study space?  When my daughter Meghan O'Doherty decided, at the age of 5, that she was going away to university and that she wanted to study the stars and the sky, I just smiled and nodded.  Well, at age 17, she is going away to do just that!  Entitled Earth and Atmospheric Science, York University in Toronto has one of the best programs in Canada.

But not only has Meghan managed to find her program of study, York Women's Volleyball is a highly respected program across the province.  Coached by Hernan Humana, the team has had consistent success over many seasons.  When Meghan emailed Hernan to let him know that she may accept at York, his enthusiasm was infectious.  He travelled to St. Catharine's for the 18U Provincial Championships and was thrilled with the performance of both the CAPS and Meghan.  Afterwards Hernan commented, "I am more than ever interested in Meghan. She plays a "big" game and she knows how to win: two traits very difficult to teach."

With both excellent academics and athletic opportunities, plus two of her best friends heading to York as well, Meghan made the big plunge and decided to say "yes" to the York opportunity.  Hernan was ecstatic, "Is it true that Meghan has decided to come to York?  If it is true, this is unbelievable.  As you know, I would love to see Meghan at York!"

So, another Capital moves on to bigger things.  Meghan has strong family ties in the York University area - I know most CAPS will remember Uncle Joe and Aunt Wendy, as well as Uncle Ross, Aunt Heather, Uncle Rich, Aunt Sandy and of course - our most ardent bench fan - cousin Sarah.  The York team travels to Ottawa on occasion, as the GeeGees are in their conference, so it will be wonderful to see Meghan in action as a York Lion.  As her coach and Mom, I am delighted with her academic choices and thrilled that Meghan will be continuuing her volleyball career with Hernan at York.  Good luck Megs!

The York University Lions finished in 4th place in the OUA (Ontario University Athletics - http://oua.ca/sports/wvolleyball/) in 2004-2005 with a record of 16-10-0.  They compete in the Eastern Division against teams from the following Universities:

RMC - Royal Military College (Kingston)
Ryerson University Rams (Toronto)
University of Ottawa GeeGees (Ottawa)
