The 16U Girls played up two age categories on Saturday, January
8th at the OVA 18U Girls Challenge Cup - Zone B, in
Trenton. The team was playing without the services of a
couple of injured players, so the girls went into the tournament
knowing that the task at hand would indeed be a challenge.
The 16Us' first opponent was Aurora Storm Cyclones who
stepped up to beat us in 2 straight sets, 22-25 and 19-25.
Kingston Pegasus was up next. The girls played well for the
most part but made a few critical mistakes at very crucial moments to
go down to defeat once again by scores of 25-27 and 24-26. This
placed us 3rd in pool.
The girls began the playoff round by soundly defeating Birch
Cliff Crush in 2 games, 25-14 and 25-17. Durham Attack
Red was up next but the girls were not as successful, going down
to defeat by scores of 25-27 and 19-25. That put us into a
playoff for 5th place against Pegasus. This time the girls
easily defeated the Kingstonians in two games 25-16 and 25-12 (quite a
different outcome from round robin play). The 16U CAPS ended up
with a 5th place finish at an 18U tournament.
According to Coach Cathy O'Doherty, "It was our second match
of the day against Pegasus that really hurt us. I considered us
to be one of the top 3 teams at this tournament, but because we lost
to Pegasus we had to play Durham Attack, and that bumped us out of the
semis. I'm confident that we'll reach finals at the next 18U
date when all our players are healthy. But each of the girls got
3 to 4 games in, so the 5th place was a team effort."
