The National Capitals 16U Girls volleyball team opened
their 16U tournament season by winning the bronze medal at the
Ontario Volleyball Association 16 & Under Girls Provincial Cup
(Zone E) on November 20th in Trenton.
Taking advantage of their experience, the #7 seed 16U CAPS easily
marched through the round robin portion of the tournament, defeating
#3 seed Kingston Pegasus (25-7, 25-10), #2 seed Ottawa
Mavericks (25-13, 25-11), and 6th seed Port Perry Panthers
(25-15, 25-6). In the playoff round, the girls continued their
dominance with a victory over the host Astros de Marc Garneau
in the quarter-finals (25-7, 25-9). However, in the
quarter-finals the 16U CAPS ran up against a very 'hot'
DRVC team and lost a tight battle (28-26, 25-23). In the
bronze medal match, the 16U CAPS recovered to beat the Ottawa
Kangaroos (25-15, 25-23).
With nine members of last year's Provincial and National 15 &
Under Girls championship team on the 16U CAPS twelve player roster,
the girls have high hopes for their 2004-2005 season. "With
all the talent and experience we have on this team, I think we can
look forward to even better results at the next 16U event of the
season", commented Head Coach Cathy O'Doherty. "We
weren't quite able to close out either of those tight sets in the
semi-finals, so we'll need to work on our intensity level during
playoff rounds in preparation for our next couple of
tournaments."
The 16U CAPS next Ontario Volleyball Association 16 & Under
tournament will be the McGregor Cup in Whitby on Saturday, December
11th.
