Playing without team captain and Team Ontario setter Tess Edwards due to injury, the National Capitals 18U girls team got off to a great start in the 2004-05 volleyball season by winning the Ontario Volleyball Association 18 & Under Girls Provincial Cup - Zone D tournament held in Ottawa this past Saturday, November 6th.

Playing in front of home town fans and family at St. Patrick High School, the 18U CAPS dominated the competition, going undefeated in six matches.  Led by Ashley Matier, who stepped in for Tess Edwards to run the offence, the 18U CAPS played inspired volleyball and took full advantage of their strong passing, serving and transition game.  "Ashley did a great job - winning the gold medal without Tess is a testament to how strong this 18U CAPS team is", stated head coach and 2003 OVA Coach of the Year Cathy O'Doherty.  "They played excellent volleyball all day."

Special thanks to Newton Noor, the tournament director, who ran a smooth and problem-free tournament.  When mid-week it was found that the central basketball hoop at the St. Patrick's gym had gone on the fritz (sorry Fritz), the Host Organizing Committee had to quickly come up with a new schedule and set-up to run as efficiently as possible on two courts instead of three.  All in attendance welcomed the relatively wide open spaces for such an OVA event, but patience was required when the tournament ran a little long due to the number of matches that went three games.  Who could complain?  After all, how many times have we had to head back to Ottawa after an event running really long in the GTA or farther west?  At least we kept the snow from falling!

Many thanks as well to the members of the Host Organizing Committee, volunteer scorekeepers, and special mention to the 16U Girls team parents who did a fantastic job running the canteen, which received many "best ever" comments from the partipating players and parents.

Next up for the 18U CAPS Girls team is the OVA 18 & Under Girls McGregor Cup - Zone D tournament in Kingston on Saturday, November 27th.
