The National Capitals 18U girls took on 4 college teams from Ontario and Québec this past weekend at the 2004 Québec-Ontario Challenge at Collège de l'Outaouais in Gatineau. The friendly 'match play' event was staged over 3 days by Coach Lynne Leblanc and her Griffons, and saw the CAPS win 2 of their 4 matches, dropping the other two in close 5-set affairs.

Friday evening saw the girls matched up against their interprovincial rival, Les Griffons de l'Outaouais. The girls started out strong but didn't quite have what it took at this early stage to finish out this tough match. Les Griffons took the match 3 sets to 2. This was the team's first opportunity to work together as a group with some of this season's new recruits. Alexandria Daymond, Heather Potts and Fritznique Richemond all played well and did a great job of jumping into the action.

Saturday play started out with a match against Les Astrelles de l'Abitibi, featuring a couple of former Junior National team prospects. Les Astrelles put up a good fight but went down to the CAPS in four sets. Newcomer Liz Wilson made her debut as a Capital, playing focused, smart volleyball from her left side position. Power hitter/libero Meghan O'Doherty went down with an ankle sprain in the first set and will need to recuperate for the next few weeks.

Next up was a small but very well coached team from Québec, L'Idéal d'André-Laurendeau. Any thought that size would be the determining factor was quickly set aside as L'Idéal's consistent defensive positioning and strong service game pushed the Capitals to get as close to their "A" game as possible in these early days of the season. It was a great match but the CAPS went down to defeat in 5 close sets.

The girls finished the weekend's play on Sunday with a match against the Sting from Seneca College in Toronto. A seasoned group of experienced players, the Sting played hard but were not able to match the Capitals' fast hitting and dominating service game. The CAPS took 3 straight sets before losing the extra fourth by a score of 25-23.

Much thanks to Lynne Leblanc for staging the event. The 18U girls return to action on Thursday, September 30th with their first match in the 2004-05 Ottawa-Carleton Volleyball League.
