The Capitals take flight

A brand new look for volleyball in Ottawa
By Paul Edwards

Starting from scratch with the design of the new image for a sports team is never an easy thing, but the founders of the new National Capitals Volleyball Club have gone all out in their efforts to make a big splash on the court this coming season.

Name

The search for a name for the new club was long and extensive but, from the beginning, one name kept coming to the fore. At first light the new name may not seem earthshaking in its originality, but ³National Capitals² was chosen for the way it captured the spirit and purpose in the club's founding vision.

Its primary meaning is self evident: this team represents Ottawa, our Nation's Capital. As such, we were blessed with the unique opportunity to brand the club with the word National and have seized upon that opportunity. It should be the goal of every member of the club to represent the word and the name with the dignity and grace it deserves.

The noun capital has many meanings in the dictionary, some of which are:

the most important town or city of a country, state, or region
Our goal is to represent Canada¹s most important city with the most impressive volleyball club in the land.

the assets with which an organization starts in business
We have as our stated objective to provide the best management and coaching assets available towards the creation of the best players and teams in the country.

accumulated wealth, esp. as used in further production
As the fruits of our efforts are realized, our goal is to give back to the emerging youth segment of the volleyball community by offering the skills and experience of the new club's senior players (our capital) in camps and school clinics, all in the aim of the continued growth of the sport.

head, top, crown, cap, cornice
The goal of the National Capitals Volleyball Club is to promote "the growth and development of youth volleyball in the Ottawa area through the pursuit and achievement of excellence in all interests". It is this goal which will lead our teams to the upper echelons of the sport.

The adjective capital is also apropos to our purposes:

excellent; first-rate
The product offered by the management and coaching staff of the NCVC to its players and members will be first-class or it will not be offered at all.

principal; most important; leading
The goal of the NCVC is to produce champions and leaders, both in the sport and in their future endeavours.

The National Capitals - a name to live up to; a name which can be worn proudly on the journey through your club volleyball career.

Symbol

The new symbol for the club was designed with the goal of capturing the youthful energy, drive and spirit of its management team, coaches, and - most importantly - its players. A small maple leaf, symbolizing the center of our country (its capital) forms the focal point for the exploding pattern of a volleyball. On the surface, it resembles a tornado, a buzzsaw, a spinning ball. Symbolically, it represents the unbridled spirit, determination and potential of each and every player within the club.

Uniforms

When starting from a clean slate, the opportunity must be taken to create a unique image with a fresh take on the traditional. In this light, the NCVC has chosen to implement a ³progressive² approach to our team uniforms. As players move up the age divisions they will sport the same overall look of the club, but in a unique colour scheme for each of the 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U divisions (below). Each player will receive a set of two jerseys, one in solid colour and one black, plus a long-sleeve warmup shirt. As the players gain seniority within the club they will work up to wearing the National Capitals primary red and black colours in their final season.

Guidelines will be in place to ensure the overall corporate image of the club is reinforced as required. Club and team sponsors logos will appear on jerseys and warmups, as agreements are secured. Quality of apparel will be first-rate, reinforcing the club's goal of providing and producing the best.
